The surface over which the walk is to be laid shall be graded to template after being rolled or tamped firm. Where the sub-grade is unstable, a 4” base of coarse 2” minus crushed rock or gravel shall be laid as a foundation. The side forms shall be rigid, bear full length on the tamped sub-grade, and shall be the depth of the finished walk. The forms are to be well staked, braced, or otherwise held rigidly to true line and grade.

All walks shall be at least 4” thick. The concrete shall be composed of approximately one part Portland cement, two and one-half parts sand, and three and one-half parts gravel.

The contractor shall take such measures as the engineer may direct to cure the concrete. Unless otherwise specified, the surface shall be float-finished. The surface shall be marked off with grooves ½” deep in approximately 2-1/2” squares.

Expansion joints shall be placed at 20 – 30’ intervals. These joints shall extend through the walk, and shall be filled with 3/8” thick joint material. The edges and sides of joints shall be finished with a suitable edging tool.

Unless otherwise directed, all walks shall slope upward from the curb toward the property line at the rate of ¼” in every 12.” (Ord. 8-N, §, 1947)
